What is a chauffeur guide in Sri Lanka?
A chauffeur guide both drives your private vehicle and guides you at sites along the way. Sri Lanka’s tourism authority licenses several categories of guide, including national, chauffeur, area and site guides; not every driver holds a guide licence.
Most private tours in Sri Lanka are run with a single person who drives and looks after you throughout the trip. Whether that person is a driver or a chauffeur guide makes a real difference.
Guide categories
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) recognises several categories of tourist guide, including:
- National guides — licensed to guide throughout the country.
- Chauffeur guides — licensed to drive and guide tourists.
- Area guides — licensed for specific regions.
- Site guides — licensed for particular sites.
(Categories and rules are set by the SLTDA and can change; we check current requirements.)
Driver or chauffeur guide?
A driver handles the road, logistics and local tips; at major sites you can hire a licensed site guide. A chauffeur guide adds commentary and explanations along the way. Neither is automatically better — it depends on how much guiding you want and your budget.

Hotels usually provide driver accommodation; this is arranged as part of your trip.
