A palm-fringed beach and fishing harbour on the south coast — Sri Lanka’s main base for whale watching from roughly November to April.
Whale-watching trips from Mirissa generally run from about November or December to April. Blue whales are the headline species; sightings are frequent in season but depend on the sea and are never guaranteed.
Mirissa has a small, lively beach with restaurants under the palms, a fishing harbour and a headland viewpoint. Boats leave the harbour early each morning in season, heading offshore where the continental shelf drops steeply and whales feed.
