Essential Sri Lanka

Ten days that add breathing space and a beach finish to the classic route: two nights each in Sigiriya and Kandy, the tea country train, a Yala safari and the south coast.

Essential Sri Lanka is the classic circuit with extra time where it matters. Two nights in Kandy mean you can visit the Royal Botanical Gardens and enjoy the city without rushing; a night in Nuwara Eliya adds tea country; and the trip ends by the sea at Mirissa, where in season you can go whale watching.

It is designed for the December–April period, when the south coast beaches are at their best. For summer travel we suggest the same inland route with an east-coast finish instead.

Trip highlights

  • Sigiriya and Dambulla
  • Two unhurried days in Kandy
  • Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya
  • Hill-country train to Ella
  • Yala safari
  • Beach time and optional whale watching in Mirissa

Frequently asked questions

Can we spend more time on the beach?

Yes — adding two or three nights on the south coast is one of the most common changes we make.

Is the train included?

We advise on and try to secure train tickets for your dates, but seats are limited and cannot be guaranteed. If there are no seats, you travel the same route by road.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes. The longest drives are around three to four hours, and the activities — Sigiriya, the train, a safari, the beach — are popular with children.
