Updated . Travel conditions change — we confirm details when we plan your trip.

Is Ella or Nuwara Eliya better?

Choose Ella for easy hikes, a relaxed village atmosphere and the Nine Arch Bridge. Choose Nuwara Eliya for tea estates, a cool colonial hill station and Horton Plains. They are linked by the scenic train, so most itineraries include one night in Nuwara Eliya and two in Ella.

Both towns sit in Sri Lanka’s central highlands and both are surrounded by tea, but they feel quite different.

Ella

  • Atmosphere: a small, lively village with cafés and guesthouses, popular with younger travellers.
  • Best for: short, rewarding hikes — Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock — the Nine Arch Bridge and waterfalls.
  • Climate: mild; warmer than Nuwara Eliya.
  • Stay: two nights.

Nuwara Eliya

  • Atmosphere: a busy highland town with colonial-era buildings and gardens.
  • Best for: tea factory visits, estate walks and Horton Plains National Park.
  • Climate: cool, sometimes cold at night.
  • Stay: one night, or two with Horton Plains.

Why not both?

The scenic train links Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) with Ella in about three to four hours — the most beautiful stretch of the line. A night in Nuwara Eliya followed by two in Ella is the classic combination.

And Haputale?

Quieter than either, with dramatic views from Lipton’s Seat. A good choice for travellers who want tea country without the crowds.
