How long should you spend in Galle?

A half day is enough to walk the ramparts and streets of Galle Fort; one night inside or near the fort lets you enjoy it at sunset and in the quiet early morning. Many travellers stay on the nearby beaches and visit Galle as a day trip.

Galle Fort was first fortified by the Portuguese and extensively rebuilt by the Dutch in the 17th century. Its ramparts enclose a grid of streets with colonial houses, churches, a mosque and a lighthouse, and it remains a lived-in town rather than a museum.

Walking the walls at sunset, as local families and cricket players gather on the grass, is one of the classic Sri Lanka moments.

Why visit Galle

For history, architecture, cafés and boutiques in a walkable setting, and as a base for the south-coast beaches.

  3. Maritime Museum

  4. Stilt fishermen at Koggala
