Is Hikkaduwa good for families?

Hikkaduwa suits families and younger travellers who like a sociable beach town. The shallow reef area is good for snorkelling in calm conditions (roughly December to April), and sea turtles often feed close to shore.

Hikkaduwa was one of Sri Lanka’s first beach destinations and still has a busier, more sociable feel than the quieter bays further south. A fringing reef shelters a shallow lagoon in parts of the beach, and further along there are breaks popular with surfers.

It makes an easy base for Galle, which is about half an hour away.

Why visit Hikkaduwa

For snorkelling and turtle-spotting in shallow water, beginner surf in season, and a choice of beach cafés — all within reach of Galle Fort.

Best things to do in Hikkaduwa

  1. Snorkel the reef

In calm conditions the protected reef area has fish and coral close to shore. Glass-bottom boats run for non-swimmers.

  2. Spot sea turtles

Green turtles often feed in the shallows. Watch from a respectful distance and do not feed them.

  3. Surf lessons

Local surf schools run lessons for beginners during the December–April season.

  4. Day trip to Galle

Galle Fort is about 30 minutes south.
