Bentota is known for its wide beach and river mouth, Madu and Bentota river boat trips, Ayurveda resorts, and two celebrated gardens — Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa’s country estate, and Brief Garden, created by his brother Bevis.
Bentota is one of the west coast’s most established resort areas, with a broad beach backed by palms and a slow river winding inland through mangroves. It is quieter than the southern surf towns and well suited to a restful stay.
It is also an easy stop between Colombo and Galle, so many itineraries include one or two nights here at the end of a trip.
For travellers who want a comfortable, uncomplicated beach stay with gentle excursions — river safaris, garden visits and Ayurveda treatments — rather than nightlife or surf.

Best from roughly December to April, when the west coast is driest and the sea calmer. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas.
Around 1 hr 30 min from Colombo by the Southern Expressway or coast road, and about 1 hr 45 min – 2 hr from the airport. The coastal railway also stops at Bentota.

In the December–April season the sea is usually calmer, but currents can be strong. Swim where hotels or lifeguards indicate it is safe.
