Colombo

Sri Lanka’s commercial capital: colonial streets, busy bazaars, Buddhist temples and a seafront promenade — best enjoyed in a relaxed half or full day at the start or end of a trip.

Is Colombo worth visiting?

Yes, for a day or a night. Colombo rewards a guided half day — Pettah’s markets, Gangaramaya Temple, the colonial Fort district and sunset at Galle Face Green — but most travellers do not need more than one night before heading inland or to the coast.

Colombo is where most journeys through Sri Lanka begin or end, yet many visitors only see it through a car window on the way from the airport. It is worth slowing down for. In a single day you can move from the spice and textile stalls of Pettah to the calm of a lakeside temple, and from Dutch- and British-era buildings to a sunset on the seafront.

The city is spread out and traffic can be heavy, so it is best explored with a driver who knows which areas to combine and when. Many travellers use Colombo as a gentle first day to recover from a long flight, or as a last-evening stop for shopping and a good dinner before an early departure.

Why visit Colombo

Colombo shows a side of Sri Lanka you will not see in the hill country or on the beaches: a crowded, multi-faith, trading city shaped by centuries of Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British contact. Temples, mosques, churches and kovils sit a few streets apart.

It is also the easiest place in the country to shop for tea, handloom textiles, books and design pieces, and it has the widest choice of restaurants.

Best things to do in Colombo

  1. Walk through Pettah

Colombo’s bazaar district, organised street by street — spices, fabric, hardware, fruit — with the red-and-white Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque at its heart. Best in the morning before the heat builds.

  2. Gangaramaya Temple and Seema Malaka

An eclectic Buddhist temple complex with a small museum of gifts from devotees, and the Geoffrey Bawa-designed meditation pavilion on Beira Lake nearby.

  3. The Fort district and Dutch Hospital

Colonial-era streets around the old Fort, with the restored Dutch Hospital now home to cafés and shops.

  4. National Museum

A good overview of the island’s history before heading to the ancient cities, housed in a white colonial building in Cinnamon Gardens.

  5. Sunset at Galle Face Green

The seafront promenade fills with families, kite flyers and street-food stalls in the early evening.

Planning your visit

How long to stay

One night is enough for most travellers, or a half-day city tour on the way to or from the airport. Food and shopping enthusiasts may enjoy two nights.

Best time to visit

Colombo can be visited year-round. It is hot and humid throughout the year; the south-west monsoon usually brings heavier afternoon rain between about May and September, and October–November can also be wet. Mornings and late afternoons are the most comfortable times to be outdoors.

How to get there

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is at Katunayake, about 35 km north of the city. Via the airport expressway the drive usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, longer at peak times. Colombo Fort is also the hub of the railway network.

Where to stay

Colombo has the country’s widest range of city hotels, from international chains on the seafront to small boutique properties in Cinnamon Gardens.

Experiences in Colombo

Good to know

Dress modestly for temple visits: shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats removed. Traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings, so we plan city tours around it.

If your flight leaves late at night, a Colombo afternoon is a good way to use the final day without a long drive.

Colombo FAQs

Should I stay in Colombo or Negombo on my first night?

Negombo is closer to the airport and quieter — good after a late arrival or before an early flight. Colombo suits travellers who want to explore a city, eat out and shop.

Can I see Colombo on a layover?

With at least six to eight hours between flights and the right visa arrangements, a short private tour of Colombo or Negombo is often possible. We check timings against your flights.
