Southern Parks & Rainforest
Sri Lanka’s best-known national park: dry scrub, lagoons and rocky outcrops with one of the world’s highest densities of leopards, plus elephants, sloth bears and rich birdlife.
Roughly February to July, in the dry season, when animals are easier to see around waterholes. Parts of the park usually close for several weeks during the late dry season (often around September to October); dates vary each year.
Yala stretches along the south-east coast. Its most visited section, Block 1, has a mix of open scrub, lagoons and rock outcrops where leopards often rest. Safaris are by jeep, with morning and afternoon sessions.
Its popularity means it can be busy with vehicles; a good driver and an early start make a big difference.
For the best chance in Sri Lanka of seeing a leopard in a short visit, as well as elephants, crocodiles and many birds.
Enter at opening for cooler air and active animals.
A longer day with a packed lunch in the park reduces the rush.

Many visitors do, especially on longer or repeated safaris, but it is never guaranteed.
Yala for leopards and varied landscapes; Udawalawe for close, reliable elephant viewing. Families with young children often prefer Udawalawe’s shorter drives.
