The Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that affect opposite coasts at different times, so there is a good region to visit in most months. Here is how to choose.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
December to April is best for the south and west coasts and the hill country; May to September is best for the east coast and the north. The Cultural Triangle can be visited year-round. October and November are the most unsettled months island-wide.
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but not every part of the island is at its best at the same time. The key is understanding the two monsoons.
The two monsoons
The south-west monsoon brings rain to the west coast, the south coast and the western slopes of the hill country, roughly from May to September. During these months the east coast is usually dry and sunny.
The north-east monsoon brings rain to the north and east, roughly from October or November to January or February. During these months the south and west coasts are at their best.
Between the two, around October and November, inter-monsoon rains can affect much of the island, usually as afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day rain.
December to April
This is the most popular time to visit. The beaches of the south and west — Bentota, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle — have calm seas and sunshine, and whale-watching boats run from Mirissa. The hill country is at its driest from January to April, which is ideal for the train ride, Horton Plains and the hikes around Ella. Yala is usually good from February onwards.
It is also the busiest and most in-demand period, particularly around Christmas and New Year, so it pays to plan early.
May to September
This is the east coast’s season. Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay enjoy calm, clear water, and Arugam Bay’s surf is at its best. The elephant gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla usually peaks from around July to October. The Cultural Triangle is dry and hot.
The south-west coast is rougher and wetter, though rain often comes in short bursts. The hill country can be misty and damp on its western side but remains beautiful, and July to September often brings a drier spell around Ella. Kandy’s Esala Perahera usually takes place in July or August.
October and November
The least predictable months, with rain possible anywhere. They can still be rewarding — fewer visitors, green landscapes — but itineraries need flexibility, and some beaches will be rough.
Month by month in brief
- January–March: South and west coasts, hill country, Cultural Triangle, Yala.
- April: Similar, but hotter; local New Year holidays make the hills busy.
- May–June: East coast begins; south-west wetter; good value.
- July–August: East coast, Cultural Triangle, elephant gatherings; Kandy Perahera.
- September: East coast; Yala often closes for part of the late dry season.
- October–November: Mixed weather island-wide.
- December: South and west coasts return to season; festive peak.
How we plan around the weather
We match the coast to your travel month, place hill-country days where mornings are clearest, and build in flexibility for rain. We cannot guarantee weather — no one can — but choosing the right side of the island makes a big difference.
