For a small island, Sri Lanka has remarkable wildlife: leopards in Yala and Wilpattu, large elephant herds at Minneriya, Kaudulla and Udawalawe, blue whales off Mirissa, and hundreds of bird species including many endemics in Sinharaja. Wildlife tours are built around seasons — which park is best, and when parks close — and allow time for more than one safari, because a second drive often brings different sightings.
