A relaxed hill-country village of tea slopes, easy hikes, waterfalls and the Nine Arch Bridge — and the end point of the famous train ride from Kandy.
Most first-time visitors should allow two nights in Ella to experience the scenic train, viewpoints, tea country and at least one hike — Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock — without rushing.
Ella sits in a gap in the hills with views down a gorge towards the southern plains. It has grown from a quiet village into one of Sri Lanka’s most popular stops, with cafés and guesthouses along its main street, but the surrounding countryside of tea estates and forest is still wonderfully walkable.
Arriving by train through the tea country is one of the highlights of a Sri Lanka trip.
For short, rewarding hikes, cool mornings, the Nine Arch Bridge and a relaxed pace after days of sightseeing.
An easy walk of about an hour each way through tea bushes to a panoramic viewpoint. Best at sunrise.
A colonial-era stone railway viaduct in the jungle; time your visit with a passing train.

Do not walk on the railway tracks near the Nine Arch Bridge when a train is due. Wear proper shoes for Ella Rock.

Yes. Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge are manageable walks for most children.
Ella is better for hiking and a relaxed atmosphere; Nuwara Eliya for tea estates and Horton Plains. Most itineraries include both.
