This is the route we suggest most often to people visiting Sri Lanka for the first time. It covers the island’s three big themes — ancient heritage, the green hill country and wildlife — in one loop, with realistic drive times and a private vehicle throughout.

You start gently near the airport, climb Sigiriya early before the heat, watch the evening ceremony at Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth, stay among tea estates, ride the famous train to Ella and finish with a safari in Yala. It is a full week, but never frantic. If you would prefer a beach finish, we can swap the final safari for the south coast in the December–April season.

Trip highlights

  • Sunrise climb of Sigiriya Rock
  • Dambulla Cave Temple
  • Evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy
  • Tea factory visit in Nuwara Eliya
  • Scenic train from Nanu Oya to Ella
  • Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge
  • Jeep safari in Yala National Park

Walk up Little Adam’s Peak early for views across the Ella Gap, then see the Nine Arch Bridge. Descend to the southern plains and head into Yala National Park on an afternoon jeep safari, looking for leopards, elephants, crocodiles and birds. Practical details

Accommodation

We suggest hotels at the level you choose — good-value, comfortable, boutique or premium — and explain why each one suits the route. You can swap any hotel before anything is booked.

Transport & guide

You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle sized for your group and luggage, with the same driver or chauffeur guide throughout. Licensed site guides can be added at major heritage sites.

Best time to travel

Works year-round, with the best balance of weather from January to April and again July to September. Yala usually closes for several weeks in the late dry season (often around September–October); in that window we switch to Udawalawe.

Add-ons for this route

Availability depends on season and your dates — we confirm before adding anything. Tick the ones you like in the form below.

Ella is the heart of tea country and the classic hill-country railway.

The Cultural Triangle pairs ancient sites with village life and elephant country.

Also possible on this trip

  • Hot-air balloon flight near Sigiriya (seasonal, weather dependent)
  • Upgrade to a tea-estate bungalow in Nuwara Eliya
  • Add two beach nights in Tangalle or Mirissa

Frequently asked questions

Is eight days enough for Sri Lanka?

Eight days is enough for a satisfying first taste covering heritage, hill country and wildlife. It does not include much beach time; add three or four nights on the coast if you want to relax at the end.

Can this tour include a beach?

Yes. Between December and April we can replace the Yala night with two nights on the south coast, or extend the trip at the end.

Can we change the hotels?

Always. We suggest hotels at your chosen level — good-value, comfortable, boutique or premium — and adjust until you are happy.
