Twin national parks around ancient reservoirs where herds of wild elephants gather to graze — the easiest elephant safari from Sigiriya.
The famous “Gathering”, when large numbers of elephants come to graze on the drying reservoir beds, usually peaks in the dry season from roughly July to October. Elephants can be seen in the area year-round; guides choose Minneriya, Kaudulla or nearby Eco Park depending on where the herds are.
Minneriya and Kaudulla are built around ancient irrigation reservoirs. As the water recedes in the dry season, fresh grass grows on the exposed beds and elephants move in from the surrounding forest, sometimes in very large numbers.
The herds move between the parks through the year, so local drivers decide on the day which one gives the best chance.
For an afternoon of elephant watching that fits easily into a Cultural Triangle itinerary, without the long drive to the south.
Most safaris run in the afternoon when elephants come out to the grasslands.
