Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya

The 5th-century rock fortress of King Kashyapa, rising almost 200 metres above the plains — Sri Lanka’s most famous sight and the natural base for exploring the Cultural Triangle.

How long do you need at Sigiriya?

Allow two nights in the Sigiriya area. The rock itself takes about three hours to climb and explore, ideally early morning; the second day covers Dambulla, Polonnaruwa or an elephant safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla.

Sigiriya is a sheer column of rock rising abruptly from the forest, with the remains of a palace on its summit and elaborate water gardens at its base. According to the island’s chronicles, it was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century CE. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the centrepiece of the Cultural Triangle.

The climb passes the famous frescoes of female figures and the Mirror Wall, then goes through the Lion Gate — two great stone paws — before the final stairway to the top.

Why visit Sigiriya

Few places in Asia combine history, engineering and landscape as dramatically. The view from the summit across forest and lakes is unforgettable, and the gardens below are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world.

The surrounding area is also the best base for Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and the elephant gatherings of Minneriya and Kaudulla.

Best things to do in Sigiriya

  1. Climb Sigiriya Rock

Go at opening time to avoid heat and crowds. The climb includes steep metal stairways; allow about three hours.

  2. Sunrise at Pidurangala

A neighbouring rock with a scramble to the top and a classic view of Sigiriya at dawn.

  3. Village experience

A bullock-cart or tractor ride, a lake crossing and a home-cooked lunch in a local village.

  4. Elephant safari

Minneriya, Kaudulla or Eco Park are within an hour, depending on where the herds are.

  5. Cycle to nearby sites

Flat country lanes make cycling pleasant early or late in the day.

Experiences in Sigiriya

Good to know

Start the climb at opening time with water and a hat. The steps can be difficult for people with a fear of heights; the gardens and museum are worthwhile even without the summit.

Wasps occasionally nest on the rock; staff close sections if they are disturbed.

Sigiriya FAQs

How hard is the Sigiriya climb?

It is around 1,200 steps with some steep, exposed stairways. Most reasonably fit people manage it at a steady pace in the cool of the morning.

Sigiriya or Pidurangala?

Do both if you can: Sigiriya for its history and frescoes, Pidurangala for the sunrise view of Sigiriya itself.

Can children climb Sigiriya?

Many do. Younger children may need help on the steep sections; we can advise based on ages.
