The first great capital of ancient Sri Lanka and one of Buddhism’s most sacred cities — vast stupas, monastery ruins and the sacred Bodhi tree.
A full day covers the main sacred sites — the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, Ruwanwelisaya and the great stupas — ideally by bicycle or car with a guide. Stay one night nearby to avoid a very long day from Sigiriya.
Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lankan kingdoms for over a millennium, from around the 4th century BCE. Its sacred area is scattered across a wide landscape of reservoirs and forest, with some of the largest brick structures of the ancient world.
It remains a living pilgrimage site: white-clad pilgrims make offerings at the Sri Maha Bodhi, a tree said to have grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
For the scale and spiritual atmosphere of a city that shaped Sri Lankan civilisation. It is quieter than Sigiriya and deeply rewarding with a good guide.

Wear white or light, modest clothing at the sacred sites. You will walk barefoot on hot stone around the stupas; go early or late.
Polonnaruwa is more compact and easier on a first trip; Anuradhapura is larger and more spiritually significant. With time, visit both.
