Wilpattu National Park

Is Wilpattu better than Yala?

Wilpattu is quieter and wilder, with fewer jeeps and dense forest around lakes; Yala usually has more open terrain and higher leopard density. Choose Wilpattu for a calmer experience, Yala for the best odds on a short visit. Neither can guarantee sightings.

Wilpattu stretches inland from the north-west coast, a mix of dry-zone forest, scrub and dozens of villus — shallow, rain-fed lakes that draw wildlife in the dry months. It is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and, because it is larger and less visited than Yala, safaris feel far more peaceful.

The forest is denser, so sightings take more patience; a full-day safari gives the best chance of seeing its leopards and sloth bears.

Why visit Wilpattu National Park

For travellers who value atmosphere over crowds and are happy to trade some certainty for solitude.
