When is the best time for dolphins at Kalpitiya?

Dolphin-watching trips from Kalpitiya generally run from about November or December to March or April, when the sea is calmer. Sightings are frequent in season but can never be guaranteed.

Kalpitiya is a long, narrow peninsula of sand, coconut palms and fishing villages, with the Puttalam lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. It feels far removed from the busier south coast.

It has two seasons of interest: the calmer months when boats go out looking for spinner dolphins, and the windy months when kitesurfers come for the lagoon.

Why visit Kalpitiya

For marine wildlife in the north-west, kitesurfing, and a simple, remote coastal stay that combines well with Wilpattu National Park.

Boats leave early; sea conditions determine whether trips run. Choose operators who keep distance from dolphins and do not chase pods.
