Is Negombo a good place for the first night?

Yes. Negombo is the closest beach town to Bandaranaike International Airport, so it is ideal after a late arrival or before an early departure. A lagoon boat ride, the fish market and the old Dutch canal fill a relaxed half day.

Negombo sits on the coast just north of the airport, between the sea and a large lagoon lined with mangroves. It has been a fishing town for centuries and a strongly Catholic one since Portuguese times — you will see churches and roadside shrines everywhere.

For travellers it is above all practical: close to the airport, with plenty of places to stay along the beach. But it is worth an afternoon of exploring rather than just a bed for the night.

Why visit Negombo

Negombo is the gentlest possible landing in Sri Lanka. You can be at your hotel within half an hour of clearing immigration, sleep off the flight, and spend your first morning on a lagoon boat or at the fish market rather than in a car.

Best things to do in Negombo

  1. Lagoon boat ride

A slow trip through mangrove channels and fishing villages on the Negombo lagoon, often with birdlife.

  2. Fish market

Early morning is the time to see the catch landed and fish laid out to dry on the sand.

  3. Hamilton (Dutch) Canal

A colonial-era canal running south towards Colombo, best seen by boat or bicycle.

  4. St Mary’s Church

A large church with a painted ceiling, reflecting the town’s long Catholic history.

Where to stay

Beachfront hotels of all levels along Porutota Road, plus smaller guesthouses — good-value comfortable stays are easy to find.

Negombo FAQs

How far is Negombo from the airport?

Usually 20–30 minutes by road, which is why it is so popular for first and last nights.

Is Negombo good for a beach holiday?

It is pleasant for a night or two, but for a longer beach stay the south coast (December–April) or east coast (May–September) is usually a better choice.
