Is Jaffna worth the journey?
For repeat visitors and culture lovers, yes. Jaffna feels very different from the south — Hindu temple life, palmyra landscapes, islands and its own cuisine. Allow at least two nights because of the travel time.
Jaffna sits at the northern tip of Sri Lanka, closer to India than to Colombo. Its culture is predominantly Tamil and Hindu, with grand kovils, a strong food tradition and a landscape of palmyra palms, lagoons and small islands.
The region was heavily affected by the civil war that ended in 2009 and has been rebuilding since. Travellers are welcomed, and a visit is a rewarding way to understand the island more fully.
