Roughly May to September, when the east coast is dry and the sea calm — the opposite season to the south-west beaches. It pairs well with a Cultural Triangle itinerary.
Trincomalee has one of the world’s great natural harbours and a long history as a trading port. Koneswaram Temple, a major Hindu shrine, stands on Swami Rock above the sea. North of town, Uppuveli and Nilaveli have long, calm beaches, and Pigeon Island National Park offers snorkelling over coral.
