Yes. Polonnaruwa is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Sri Lanka and more compact than Anuradhapura, so the highlights fit into three to four hours. Gal Vihara’s carved Buddhas are a highlight of any trip.
Polonnaruwa became the island’s capital in the 11th century and flourished under King Parakramabahu I, who built the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir. The ruins of the royal palace, council chamber and religious quadrangle sit close together in parkland.
The standout is Gal Vihara: four Buddha figures carved from a single granite face, including a reclining Buddha about 14 metres long.
