Not every trip needs a beach. This route concentrates on the heart of the island: the rock fortress and cave temples of the Cultural Triangle, the living traditions of Kandy, and the tea estates and montane grasslands of the Nuwara Eliya area. Two nights in each place keeps the pace comfortable.

Because it avoids the coasts, it works in most months, including the summer when the south-west is wet. It is also a strong base to extend with a beach — south coast in winter, east coast in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a beach at the end?

Yes. Bentota or the south coast are good additions from December to April; Pasikuda or Trincomalee from May to September.

Is the last day a long drive?

It is five to six hours to the airport. We can instead end with a night in Negombo or Colombo if your flight is early.
