Is the Dambulla Cave Temple worth it?

Yes — it is one of Sri Lanka’s finest religious sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visit takes one to two hours including the climb, and fits easily into a day at Sigiriya.

The Dambulla cave temples sit under a great overhanging rock above the town. Inside five caves are more than 150 Buddha images and walls and ceilings covered in paintings, some restored in later centuries. The site has been a place of worship since before the common era and remains active today.

It is a short climb up stone steps, with views across the plains to Sigiriya from the top.

Why visit Dambulla

The atmosphere inside the painted caves, especially early in the day, is among the most memorable in the country.
