Getting Around Sri Lanka: Driver, Train or Bus?
Private driver, scenic train, public bus or tuk-tuk? An honest comparison of how to travel around Sri Lanka.

What is the best way to get around Sri Lanka?
For most visitors, a private car with a driver is the most comfortable and efficient way to travel between regions, combined with a scenic train section in the hill country. Buses are cheap but slow; tuk-tuks are great for short local trips.
Private car with driver
The most popular choice. You travel door to door at your own pace, can stop for photos, fruit stalls or a detour, and have someone who knows the roads. It is especially practical for families, older travellers and anyone with luggage. You can choose a driver or a chauffeur guide, who also guides at sites.
Train
The hill-country line between Kandy, Nanu Oya and Ella is one of the world’s great rail journeys. Most travellers ride one section and let their driver carry the luggage by road. Reserved seats are limited and sell out, especially in high season; unreserved carriages are crowded but authentic. Trains are slow and delays are common, so treat the ride as an experience rather than transport.
The coastal line between Colombo and Galle is also scenic, though the expressway is faster by road.
Public bus
Buses reach almost everywhere and are very inexpensive, but they are slow, crowded and not designed for luggage. They suit backpackers with time rather than holidaymakers on a schedule.
Tuk-tuk
Three-wheelers are ideal for short trips in towns and beach areas. Agree the fare before you start, or use a ride-hailing app where available.
Domestic flights and helicopters
Limited domestic flights and helicopter transfers can save time on long routes, such as to Jaffna or the east coast, but schedules and luggage limits vary. We check options on request.
Self-drive
Possible with a local permit, but driving in Sri Lanka is demanding — busy roads, mixed traffic and unfamiliar rules. Most visitors prefer a driver.
